Brandy Mansfield
GOODBYE TO THE MOST ADORABLE DOG (26 JULY 2014)
A heartbroken Pat tells us “In March 2013 we were delighted to adopt Brandy, a large male Golden Retriever with a big nose, huge paws and a permanently wagging tail. He was just 3 months off his 10th birthday.
It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that last Wednesday Brandy was diagnosed with liver cancer which had spread to his stomach. He had been getting progressively picky with his food and had lost quite a lot of weight but the initial blood tests done back in June came back as normal. However, we took him back to the vets and they did an ultra sound and found out just how poorly he was. Wednesday was the last day he ate anything and yesterday morning we made the oh so difficult decision to end his suffering.
The vets came out to the house as I didn’t want his last memory to be that of the vets. Gently and with great compassion they put him to sleep while I held him.
We are simply devastated. He was only 11 and we had just 16 months with him – and he was just the most adorable dog. He will be very sadly missed.”
His time was far too short with you but he, clearly, had the most wonderful home in the Autumn of his years. Sleep peacefully, Brandy.
BRANDY’S HISTORY
In 2013, Brandy was about 9 yrs old. He was surrendered to IRR by his previous owner owing to a change in their own health which made it difficult for them to look after him.
FOSTERER’S REPORT – Ireland
Brandy – is very good natured and a bit of a dollop. He loves to bring you a toy or cushion when you come home; typical retriever. He is good with cats. Our old ginger cat likes to lie in between his paws. He’s good on the lead; sits and lies to command and has good recall. Brandy is also good with children.
FOSTERER’S REPORT – UK Dec 2012
Andy said “We have found Brandy to be a very friendly dog who loves all the dogs he meets. He is getting on very well with our dog Smudge, the two of them being rarely apart. We’re told he’s cat friendly, and while we’re not in a position to test this, we have no reason to suspect otherwise. He likes meeting people, especially children, although care may need to be taken with toddlers, as he could knock them over in his eagerness to say hello.
He’s great on the lead and my Mom, who’s 74, takes both Brandy and Smudge out together with no problems at all. He’s fine in the car, and seems to enjoy going out in it, sitting happily looking out of the window. He can be left, and causes no damage at all, but will meet you with whatever he can pick up on your return, from cushions to shoes.
His only concession to age is stiffness in his back legs when he stands up sometimes, but it doesn’t seem to worry him, and he loves his walks. That aside, he doesn’t look, or act his 8 years, and his big waggy tail and curiosity about things are almost puppy-like at times”.
