Charlie Roberts
THE VERY BEST OF NEWS (MARCH 2019)
When Charlie’s prospective adopters changed their minds and backed out at the eleventh hour, it seemed like fate and meant that his fosterer, Liz, decided to adopt Charlie herself.
Having lost her beloved George shortly before Christmas, Liz was hoping to adopt again some time as Ted was miserable and needed a new companion. With Charlie and Ted hitting it off so well and already being besties, it was a perfect solution to Ted’s loneliness and Charlie’s need for a forever home.
We are all delighted and think they look gorgeous together. Charlie is already helping Ted with the duties of being a perfect foster brother to a lovely young lady from Ireland.
HISTORY
Charlie is a 3yr old castrated Golden Retriever. He has been vet checked and received the necessary vaccinations to obtain his Pet Passport. Once in the UK, he went into foster with Liz in the Midlands.
PERSONALITY
Liz says “Charlie is a lovely natured, very sociable, biddable dog.
He is confident , alert and inquisitive, playful and happy but he is boisterous and energetic and he loves to be active so he is not for the faint hearted. He loves people and interacting with them.. He is very well behaved, very adaptable and a pleasure to foster. We will miss him”.
HEALTH
Charlie is, generally, in very good health. He nibbles his back right haunch from time to time quite furiously. I can see no fleas or skin infection but am monitoring this. He gets very tired so, I would say, he is not used to long walks
SOCIAL LEARNING
BASIC TRAINING: I would give him 4/5. He understands basic commands like sit. no etc and, now, he has learned to sit for his food. He learns very quickly. He worked out the dog flap almost instantly. He can open doors with lever handles!!! He climbs so I monitor him closely in the garden . He does show interest in what is next door and stands on low walls, chairs etc to try and see over the 6ft fence. I don’t think he would try and escape but he is very interested in what’s happening everywhere. Fortunately, he responds very well to ‘Stop’ He was wary of water initially but will now splash about. It is, clearly, still a new thing for him
TRAVEL: Charlie is happy and content travelling in a vehicle
HOUSETRAINING: He is toilet trained
LEADWALKING and RECALL: I would give him 4/5 for walking loose lead with a sip lead and 5/5 for walking loose lead’ with a body harness. He has not been tested on a halti or equivalent.
His recall is excellent in answer to his name in the garden and on a long line when out
RESOURCE GUARDING: Charlie shows no evidence of resource guarding. He loves his toys and plays tug of war with Ted. He shows no aggression with toys. They swap beds all the time in the kitchen and upstairs and with no issues. Charlie doesn’t need to be fed separately. They swap bowls when they’ve finished!
SEPARATION ANXIETY: He shows no signs of separation anxiety. He has been left for 2 hours. Charlie hasn’t made a sound yet!
ADULTS: He is very friendly to adults but he is inclined to jump up so this needs to be worked on.
CHILDREN: Charlie is very friendly with children but he does need more testing as he will jump up and lick. He is too boisterous for very small children.
DOGS: He is very interested to meet and greet other dogs. He is very friendly but he can be overly boisterous and will jump up. He has met a lot of dogs on walks and at the vets Charlie happily romps with Ted and plays bitey face with no aggression. He defers to Ted. Ted really told him off the other day, I think because he was tired, but Charlie accepted this.
CATS: He has not been tested on cats as such but he has ignored cats seen in the neighbourhood.
CHARLIE’S DREAM HOME
Charlie needs a loving home with people willing to carry on his training and socialisation. He is a very busy boy so he needs an equally active forever home. As he loves other dogs, he really needs to go to a house with, at least, one other dog.
That turned out to be the adorable Ted.
