Cody Turner

Gone to Rainbow Bridge

Sad News 21 March 2024

Cody’s mum said, “It is with a very heavy heart that I have to tell you that our dear quirky IRR boy Cody passed over Rainbow Bridge this afternoon. He had only been poorly for a short while but today was definitely his time. We will always love you Cody you taught us so much. RIP sweet Angel xxx”

A HAPPY FOREVER HOME UPDATE (13.2.2019)

Val says, “After a very long wait of well over a year, a new fur baby finally found us and that is Cody, the latest permanent member of our family. We already love him to bits but adopting him will not stop us from fostering more dogs in the future.

Cody is a total cuddle monster with perfect manners around the house and I don’t think we need to have any worries about how Cody reacts to little humans.

It is obvious he hasn’t been taken out and about so, as he is finding it quite scary at the moment, we are busy helping him to gain confidence with going out into the big wide world to ensure that he will be able to enjoy his new life to the full. Fortunately, he is a quick learner and he is already understanding that he can trust us. He is brave enough to try the things we are asking of him so we are sure all he needs is time to adjust.

We feel our family is complete again as it was with Guido and we are looking forward to taking Cody out and about with us on holiday and wherever we go as we do with Honour.”

CODY FURTHER UPDATE (13-4-2019)

Here is Cody with Honour and Mum. Val said, “We are having a great time in Yorkshire. It is a steep learning curve for Cody, bless him, but he is doing really well, with, of course a lot of help from Honour xxx

HISTORY

Cody was aged between 5 and 7 years old when he came into IRR care. He is said to be good with dogs and children and was only surrendered because of someone developing an allergy. As normal, he was vet checked and rabies vaxed before coming to the UK where he went into foster with Val & Barry and, of course, their lovely Honour.

FOSTER ASSESSMENTS FROM VAL

PERSONALITY: Cody has settled in well, he has a wonderful loving nature and it just feels like he has been with us forever which is why we are adopting him.

He is extremely loving and accepts hugs and cuddles very readily. He is a very affectionate baby and loves to sit really close, he is settling at night really well sleeping in our bedroom Everything is progressing nicely even though we have a way to go to help Cody become completely confident and at ease when he is out and about.

In general, Cody is quite a settled dog but, when he encounters something he doesn’t understand, he becomes quite anxious and runs to hide behind my legs. However, he will trust me when I show him the way and I’m sure he will soon accept things more easily. We absolutely adore him and feel with gentle help in several ways his confidence will grow and he will be able to enjoy a much fuller life.

HEALTH: Cody has one or two really rough patches on some of his front pads so I am treating them with an oil mix.

He was a little bit itchy initially but he had a lot of dead hair in his coat which we managed to brush out. Fortunately, he is ok with brushing. We have also given him a couple of baths with

Aloe and Oatmeal shampoo and all his itching has now stopped. He does seem to get hot really quickly and when we have the coal fire lit he really struggles with the heat and goes off into another room.

I have put him on the maximun dosage of Yudigest and Burns Sensitive food as he had quite bad diarrhoea when he arrived but things are settling down nicely now and I am gradually reducing the dosage of Yudigest.

SOCIAL LEARNING

He has perfect manners and behaviour around the house. He already has our household routine sorted, he knows exactly when it’s walk time and can be persistent if we are a bit late, bless him. However it is obvious that he hasn’t been taken out and about, big open spaces really scare him, although he doesn’t seem to be frightened of vehicles, when asked to go into someone else’s house he needs a lead but he will follow.

TRAVEL: He is happy and content travelling in a vehicle

HOUSETRAINING: Cody is fully housetrained.

BASIC TRAINING: Cody was quite confused when he first arrived resulting in him being quite jumpy but he began to settle down after a while.

There are several things in the house that he is frightened of… the Hoover, the hair dryer, the washer, all things I would expect him to be familiar with, but none of these issues are serious, they just need time.

We thought he had a problem with his right front leg as each time we asked him to sit he held his front leg up, then we realised he had been taught to “sit and give his paw”, bless him. We are trying to work out what kind of environment he has come from and we are beginning to think he may have been in some kind of dog pen in the garden, perhaps with short spells in doors. Periodically, he goes to the door, goes outside, looks around and then looks at me with a confused expression.

LEADWALKING and RECALL: He has no idea how to walk on a lead and pulls with a slip lead but, already, we can see some improvement with this. He also seems to be enjoying his walks now with a bit less confusion.

We need to be taking Cody out and about as much as possible over the next few weeksto get him used to other dogs and being in public spaces. At the moment, I am walking him on a “Walk your dog with love” harness but with a double lead attached to the harness and also his collar and already he is beginning to respond.

He is very responsive when we ask something of him, like his recall from out in the garden.

RESOURCE GUARDING: Cody shows no evidence of resource guarding and doesn’t object to me being near him when he’s eating. He doesn’t know what to do with toys and he doesn’t pick anything up.

SEPARATION ANXIETY: He shows no signs of separation anxiety. As yet we haven’t left the boys on their own but Cody will take himself off into another room and lay down. He doesn’t follow me around the house so I’m not really expecting any separation problems.

ADULTS: He is very friendly with adults He is very sociable with people and loves everyone.

CHILDREN: Cody is untested with children.

DOGS: He has not met up with many dogs as yet. He has always been very sociable with Honour, but, when we went up to my daughter’s, he wasn’t keen on April’s oldest female dog. He seemed to be a bit confused with all the space around him and, on reflection, we should have taken them all for a walk together first.

His lead work is getting better but when we meet up with other dogs he really doesn’t know how to behave and he either growls or goes up on his hind legs. I am still trying to work out if this is fear, he hasn’t actually attempted to bite another dog, he is quite jumpy in his reactions but he is backing off when he’s growling so we are working on that. I have a friend coming to see me next week, she lives in Kent and does dog training/behaviour problems for a her job so I’m hoping she will be able to clarify for me and advise the best way we can help Cody overcome his worries.

CATS: Cody is untested with cats.
