Magic Gibbs
Sad News 25 December 2021
Magic’s mum said, “It is with great sadness I tell you that my gorgeous boy Magic had to be put to sleep on Christmas Day. He had degenerative myelopathy and his back legs gave up.
I hope I gave him the magical years you promised him when you named him, it’s just so sad he didn’t get more years.
My heart is broken, he was my everything and I miss him so very much.
He was such a gentle and special boy, everyone loved him.”
History
THE MOST APPALLING LIVING CONDITIONS
Magic is a pure bred Golden Retriever who is between 16 and 18 months old. He is microchipped and has received the necessary vet checks to allow him to get his Pet Passport.
This boy is a real stunner. He is only just about to be neutered because of being so underweight. He needs to build up his muscle mass on his rear end due to lack of nutrition and exercise but this is being dealt with slowly.
Magic was one of the dogs taken from a large puppy breeding operation which was recently closed down by the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in a high profile case. “Even seasoned ISPCA Officers found the conditions encountered at this premises truly shocking and it was imperative that the dog breeding operation be shut down”.
IRR has worked with many Irish Rescues and local Dog Pounds when Golden Retrievers are at risk and when IRR were asked to assist in the re-homing of Magic, there was no answer except ‘What time? Where? We are on the way.’ “He’s really filthy” “Don’t worry, nothing that a good groom, soap and water won’t fix. He will be right as rain in no time’
We have close affiliations with many rescues and have become great friends with those who do their work but don’t want the praise but we have to say a huge “thank you” to Sonia and Angela for their help and kindness and all they do in assisting us save lives.
CATHERINE’S ASSESSMENT
What can we say about Magic? He is a gentle soul, sweet and loving despite his dreadful start in life. He was enclosed in a small kennel on a puppy farm, like many of the dogs. The conditions he endured were horrendous according to one of ISPCA officers. Despite this, he has the gentlest of natures. He was a very sad boy but once a ball was produced he switched to ‘oh! a ball’ and his tail started to wag like a windmill.
He had no name and so Kathryn, the Irish Co-ordinator was asked by the rescue to give him a name that would imply a hopeful outcome. ‘What about Magic?’ His past may have been dreadful, his present is better, but his future will be Magical! “what a perfect name!”
Magic will be groomed and will receive the attention he so richly deserves. He will be looked after until he gets a safe, loving home where he will be treasured and loved.
SOCIAL LEARNING
He is not house-trained yet, but no doubt this can be easily remedied.
He travelled well in the car and was very quiet.
Lead work needs to be done, slowly and patiently, as he has never been used to a lead and has negative associations with it. However, produce a ball and say ‘play time let’s walk’ and his demeanour changes.
It is uncertain what he is like with children, so, we will not rehome him with young children but he would probably be very happy with older teenagers who will help him realize his full potential.
He is great with dogs though he hasn’t been cat tested as yet.
MAGIC’S DREAM HOME
A really magical home with someone who has prior experience of Golden Retrievers is essential. Training classes, lots of walks, cuddles and love will help him forget his dreadful past and embrace a magical future, showing him that not all humans are cruel and unkind but there are lots of wonderful people who will do nothing but enhance his life.
SOME GOOD NEWS (June 2015)
Magic has gone to his Forever Home
UPDATE FROM MAGIC’S FOREVER HOME (July 2015)
My beautiful boy Magic has settled in really well. From the second day here he just fitted in and has taken a great liking to my flokati rug, which he spends his days playing and sleeping on. He loves playing with all his new toys and teddies and is enjoying a puppyhood he has never had. Walking has progressed far more than I ever expected at this stage, he now goes for a walk round the block, still a little scared but is very willing to go out which I never expected yet.
I have to thank you all at the IRR for letting me have this gorgeous boy and for everything you all do to help rescue goldies.
