Maisie

(Was Mabel)

Update August 2018

Luckily for Mabel, she has been adopted by Eileen and Noreen who, recently, said “goodbye” to dear old Holly, and, tragically in 2013 lost their beautiful Kimmy.

Mabel, now called Maisie, will be living with her new sisters Bella and Tessa, on a small holding with goats, sheep, chickens and ponies all of which have been rescued like her.

Maisie has settled into her new home really quickly and is loving living with all her new friends. She has put on some weight and is enjoying her walks in the surrounding countryside and neighbouring fields.

Belinda says: “We went and saw Maisie recently and she is looking really well and happy. She has certainly landed on all four paws – we couldn’t have wished for a better outcome for her”.

HISTORY

Mabel is a beautiful 13 year Golden Retriever.  As normal, she was vet checked and received the necessary vaccinations to travel to the UK. She was also thoroughly washed and groomed.

Mabel came from a home with an older lady.  She has, clearly, been well looked after and loved until recently. Her Golden Retriever companion, sadly, had died after eating a rat. Latterly, Mabel was living in a ramshackle old cage in the garden.

The older lady’s daughter, despite having well looked after dogs of her own, didn’t want Mabel so she was going to be put to sleep when IRR heard about her and rescued her from her sad and lonely situation.  It is especially heartbreaking as she is bound to wonder what she did wrong to end up in such a sorry state after a lifetime of love. Mabel left Dublin on the 9pm ferry and arrived in Bristol on 29th June at 4am to be met by her fosterers Belinda and Terry PERSONALITY

Belinda says “Mabel is very sweet, She reminds us of Stella temperament-wise.. . quite independent and could be stubborn, I think, but lovely nature.

She likes to follow Terry about and loves being petted”.

HEALTH

For a senior citizen, Mabel seems to be in pretty good health and moves freely. She is a little underweight but that is no bad thing really as it does help to take the load off elderly legs.

She has slightly weepy eyes which are being bathed but no other obvious problems.

SOCIAL LEARNING

TRAVEL: Having managed the entire journey from Dublin to Bristol with no problems, Mabel was sick on the way home to Wells!!!!!!!!!! As this is only 20 miles, she, clearly, preferred the transporter’s driving to Terry’s!!!!!

GROOMING: She was very smelly after the car incident so the only option was a good bath at the groomer’s where the girls fell in love with her because she was as good as gold. After grooming, she is looking absolutely stunning again.

HOUSETRAINING: On arrival in Wells, Mabel did both businesses in the garden.   After eating her breakfast, she went straight out for a wee and then trotted back in. It is obvious she is a dog who has spent the majority of her life living indoors in a happy home.

BASIC TRAINING: In her lifetime, Mabel has been well trained and was once a big part of someone’s life.

RESOURCE GUARDING: She shows absolutely no sign of resource guarding.

SEPARATION ANXIETY: She has not been left alone but it is doubtful she would be unduly bothered if she was as she is very laid back.

ADULTS and CHILDREN: Mabel absolutely loves people and is very gentle so, although she hasn’t met any children as yet, she is unlikely to have a problem with them.

DOGS: On arrival, the resident dogs gave her a brief sniff and then ignored her. Bunty didn’t even realize she was meeting a new dog! Mabel, immediately, just became a part of the pack and hasn’t been an ounce of trouble. She is definitely happy and relaxed in doggy company.

CATS: Not tested but she is so laid back and gentle it is unlikely she would be mean to one.

MABEL’S DREAM HOME

Mabel will probably love the company of another dog or dogs and, preferably, with people who are at home most of the time. She would benefit from a quiet adult home so she can spend her days taking walks at her own pace, relaxing and chilling without having to put up with too much noise or fast pace living.

IRR very much want Mabel to end up in a home where she is adored and properly cared for in her Autumn years. Somewhere that she truly belongs with people who will shower her with affection and where she will want for nothing. In return, for sure, she will give her forever family loads of love as only a Golden can.
