Max
Max is a 10 month old Golden Retriever who has had all his puppy vaccinations. He is a very tall boy and was underweight but not by much now. He is fast approaching the age where he will be due to be neutered.
HISTORY
Max was relinquished from a home with two recently diagnosed autistic children. In order to cope with juggling all the balls and for his safety, this meant he had been crated simply to keep him out of the way of the children. He had lived with the family since he was 14 weeks old. When asked to help him, of course, IRR weren’t going to say “no”.
A nice lady called Carol collected and fostered him.
He soon found a forever home where there was a resident Retriever who seemed very chilled. At first, everything was going well but, after a few days, Max was returned as it seems the resident dog didn’t like the attention another dog was getting and decided that Max wasn’t staying.
PERSONALITY
Max has a strong personality but he is very adaptable. He loves to be part of everything going on and doesn’t like to be left out of anything.
SOCIAL LEARNING
Travel: He travels well but needs to be restricted in the car as he will jump into the back seat and then into the front seat if he can. He wanted to sit on Carol’s
knee when she went to pick him up.
Housetraining: The first couple of nights Carol crated him as we were told that was where he preferred to sleep but Max was stressed in the crate and had peed in it. On the 3rd night, Carol decided to leave him out all night so he slept with her dogs in her living room and he was clean.
Basic obedience: Max is a confident dog who has been set no boundaries as to home etiquette. Being a typical 10 month old pup, he had poor Carol run ragged especially as he can open doors and get out easily. He didn’t know his name but soon picked it up along with the word “no!”
He was quick and keen to learn and did pick up sit, wait and down in the 10 days he was with her.
Leadwalking and recall: He, clearly, hasn’t been walked on a lead very much at all but he just loves getting out and about and taking in all the sights and smells that are very new to him. Heather walked all four dogs herself and found Max did pull but he picked up walking to heel very quickly. She walked him on a slip lead as, if you loosened the lead, he went back to wandering everywhere. He has been in swimming while on the lead and loved it.
Heather won’t let him off lead as she is not sure he would come back.
Food: He eats well and is not food aggressive or possessive but does like to steal food from any surface he can get his paws on. He has also investigated inside the dishwasher as he can open doors.
Children: I definitely wouldn’t like to rehome him with young children as he is very bouncy and will knock them over.
Dogs: He was living with two Retrievers and six Yorkies in his fosterer’s house. When he was returned, he opened the back door to the kitchen and let himself out to play with Rusty, Pepper and Bailey. Fortunately, they are all well socialised. He probably thought he was coming in to be top dog but he met his match in Pepper. She told him off by grumbling at him and he soon backed off. There wasn’t and hasn’t been any aggression towards any of the other dogs at all and he has fitted in well at Heather’s.
He can be rehomed with other dogs but Heather would err on the side of caution with other un-neutered males. He has been super with her Bailey and Rusty who have both been neutered and also with Sparky at Carols.
DREAM HOME
Max needs a home with loving, energetic people who are prepared to put in the time to continue his training, to fully exercise him and to allow him to use his brain in a positive way.
Small children are best avoided but dog-loving teenagers would probably be just right for him. He would, undoubtedly, enjoy living in a home with another friendly, neutered dog or dogs.
