WEE MEG IS A WONDERFUL GIRL (UPDATE 19.7.2020)

Fran emailed to tell us, “Wee Meg is still very much part of our family. She and Millie are the best of friends and they love to play together. Our grandchildren adore her and she is so good with them. She is very gentle but likes to play a game of fetch as well.

She has had one or two trips to the vet but nothing major, thank goodness. She travels really well and behaves beautifully at the vet.

We feel so lucky and privileged to have Meg. It is only because of everyone at IRR involved in her rescue that we have her so thank you so much. 🙏🏻

We hope you are all keeping safe in these uncertain times?”

Sent with kind regards from Fran and the Baldwin family and lots of love from Meg and Millie xx

A HAPPY FOREVER HOME UPDATE (22.5.2019)

Fran told us “We travelled to Meg’s fosterer, Lynn, in Scotland with our 3 year old spayed Golden Retriever to meet Meg in February 2019. Thankfully both dogs got on famously. Lynn was very kind to us and she has a great set up to look after all her dogs, horses etc.

Meg travelled home really well and, indeed, settled in immediately. We left her in the sitting room overnight with Millie giving them access to the kitchen and there was not a peep out of either of them!

Millie and Meg play fight a lot and, despite Meg being a great deal smaller than Millie, she always wins!  Meg is such a happy, bustling playful girl to have around. Our grandchildren absolutely adore her. We thought there might have been some issues given the treatment she had endured before being rescued but, apart from being frightened by wind and some sudden noises/movement which we had been warned about, there really has been nothing.

She is growing in confidence every day and is now a beautiful cheeky girl. We can’t thank the rescue enough for allowing us to become her adopters as she is a delight and we love her to bits.  Thank you so much Fran and Neil.”

HISTORY

Meg is a lovely, small stocky 6yr old Golden Retriever who came from Northern Ireland. She was fostered by Lynn in Scotland.

This darling girl found herself in a small rescue 6 months ago and was rehomed to a female in her early twenties.

Unfortunately, Meg had some separation issues and does not like being shut in crates or small spaces but, we believe, she was being shut in the tiny kitchen and was, therefore, barking. This annoyed the young woman who started kicking Meg to shut her up.

Recently, with alcohol involved, the girl had been out and come home with friends. Meg was barking so she got a kicking and then the friends joined in, just kicking her every time they walked past her.

The rescue was contacted and the woman said that, if the boyfriend got home and Meg was still there, then he would “finish her off” so she was urgently taken into IRR care.

MEG’S DREAM HOME

Meg is a lovely dog with a super nature who doesn’t ask a lot from life. She just needs to live with another dog or dogs and with someone who is patient and kind and at home a fair bit.

This beautiful girl deserves to be unconditionally loved to bits for what will, hopefully, be a long and happy life.

PERSONALITY

Meg is a calm, very happy dog who goes with the flow and has a great outlook on life. She is very accepting of her circumstances and just fits in. If she gets a fright or doesn’t understand what you are asking of her, she lies down and rolls onto her side.

There is not one bit of aggression in this lovely girl which makes it a very bitter pill to swallow

knowing she has been beaten so severely.

Meg is fairly confident, calm and laid back. She is alert and inquisitive and, almost unbelievably, is still playful and happy.

HEALTH

She is small and quite chunky with good bone Meg is a retriever with a leg firmly in each corner. She has a “whooping” bark and is quite vocal as in grunting and she snores quite heavily. I strongly suspect she has a partially paralysed larynx. It does not appear to bother or inhibit her in any way at all

SHORTLY AFTER ARRIVAL

Lynn says “So far, Meg is a really normal dog and she seems pretty easy. I’ve bathed her and she was as good as gold. She has met everyone and knew what to do so someone, somewhere has had her out and about and meeting dogs.

She is scared of the wind and it’s really windy today but she has settled well already and is lying flat out on the floor in the living room with my lot”.

SOCIAL LEARNING (ASSESSMENT 23-1-2019)

TRAVEL: She is happy and content travelling in a vehicle

HOUSETRAINING: Meg is house trained

BASIC TRAINING: She is well socialized and trained in basic commands

LEADWALKING and RECALL: She walks quite nicely on slip lead. Meg can be a little uncertain of strange things when out walking on the lead in towns or if there is a strong wind. She is good walking off the lead in a safe area and stays with you but her recall is only 50/50.

RESOURCE GUARDING: Meg shows no evidence of resource guarding

SEPARATION ANXIETY: She does have a dislike of crates and small spaces. If shut in a small room, she will bark but, given the run of the house, she is more settled. She does have mild separation issues but has proved to be fine with the company of another dog.

ADULTS: Very friendly

CHILDREN: Meg has not been tested with children

DOGS: She is very friendly and sociable with other dogs including puppies. She joins in games and plays well.

CATS: Meg has not been tested with cats
