Gone to Rainbow Bridge

Sad News Monday 20 June 2022

Ozzy’s mum said, “It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart that we have to tell you that we said goodbye to our lovely and gorgeous Ozzy yesterday. At 13½ he enjoyed life to the full right to the end, insisting on being the life and soul of the party.  He was diagnosed with a lower digestive tract problem after blood tests and an ultrasound. This deteriorated quickly and he crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday (20.06.22). The grief is indescribable and we are very grateful for a wonderful 5 years with him. Such a sweet, gentle and kind soul who was my best friend and gate guardian. Andy couldn’t find me this morning as Ozzy always blocked the doorway to whichever room I was in and, of course, he wasn’t there today. He was so loved and we are going to miss him so much. RIP our beautiful boy.”

HISTORY

Ozzy is a 9yr old, castrated, pure-bred Golden Retriever

He has been with his owner since he was 12weeks old. He had regular vaccinations until 2yrs ago when circumstances changed.  Babies arrived which meant the family didn’t go on holidays so Ozzy no longer needed to go into kennels.

Ozzy used to go indoors before baby came and loved laying in front of fire. He is a beautiful dog but he is extremely energetic and requires a lot of stimulation to keep him calm which is the reason for his rehoming as his owner can no longer give him enough attention.

His saddened owner says “While I write this my heart breaks. Ozzy and I have had great times together and he truly is a loving creature underneath all the energy he has”.

TEMPERAMENT

He has a great temperament and is easy to groom and wash. He is very eager to please and even helps tidy up afterwards. He won’t damage flowers or dig holes but he will steal shoes and toys and make them his own  but, if you just give him a rag, he’s happy carrying that instead.

SOCIAL LEARNING

BASIC TRAINING: He was properly trained so he is very obedient and will stay, lay down, wait and when on walks, if his owner holds out her hand, he will not pass it..

HOUSETRAINING: He will not toilet in his crate or house outside. When he was indoors, he would whimper at the door to go out. Outside, he always goes to the toilet on the grass.

LEADWALKING & RECALL: He will not go out of sight on a walk. He likes to nosey on but that’s it. He loves walks and water and is awesome at retrieving bottles or balls as long as you introduce the item before you ask him to fetch it.  He has been trained to ignore cattle and other dogs etc and he simply walks on.

ADULTS: He is a great guard dog, knowing who should not be around, and he will bark to alert us. When people do come to the house, he will only bark, he would never bite.

CHILDREN:  Ozzy would never hurt a child but his owner has a 2yr old and another on the way. Unfortunately, he can be a bit crazy and he doesn’t see the child, only the toys to steal, which worries her owner so she feels he really needs to be in a home with older children or even adults only.

DOGS: He is very placid and loves other dogs. He would cry up into the air if another dog nipped him, he’s so soft that way. He lives outside with a female Springer Spaniel but she is quite different to him and isn’t as energetic as him.

CATS: He is afraid of cats although his size scares them. The mother in law has cats and he is always only after their food. He runs at high speed to get to the dishes to clear them.

OZZY’S DREAM HOME

Ozzy would love to live indoors again in an adult only home or one with older children. He needs an energetic family where he can join in their activities and be the centre of attention again. He would probably also enjoy the company of another dog again.
