Pele
UPDATE FROM PELE’S FOREVER HOME (APRIL/MAY 2015)
In April, Pele was really good when he was registered with the vet but he weighed in at a well covered 37kg so Maurice and Shirley knew they had some work to do. The nurse gave them some good advice and suggested he went back to the weight loss clinic in 2 weeks.
Things continued to go well and, a week on, Maurice said “Pele has settled in lovely, what a good boy he is, loving his walks & having his teeth cleaned. He went to the beauty parlour on Tuesday, had a shampoo & light trim and was really good. He did have to have the middle partition taken out of the drying cabinet but he sat in it, no problem at all, and came back smelling wonderful”.
Another week and he told us “Pele is certainly good for Captain, we are so pleased. He is going for a weight check to see if he is doing all right. One thing we have noticed though, is that he is very nervous of squeaky toys so we think possibly that was to do with the children issue and he may well have been teased with something squeaky. He was really pleased when, instead, he was given a new hard rubber ball & a rope to tug”.
One more week passed and we heard that things were going really well, Pele had settled in really well, his recall was good & he loved being off the lead when in a safe place. The down side, he had only lost half a kilo at weight check so they were going again the following week.
Maurice says “We know it all takes time & patience but we are so happy with him.
HISTORY
Pele is a large, neutered 4yr old Golden Retriever named after the legendary football player. Although big boned, he still needs to lose some weight.
He was tormented by a neighbour’s children and eventually he snapped so that was why his family had to give him up. They were totally heartbroken but they put him first as they knew the children would just go on bullying him if he stayed.
PERSONALITY
Considering his ample proportions, he is full of energy and doesn’t stay still for long. He is inquisitive, affectionate and sweet natured and he loves to play. He loves to be scratched just above his tail or behind his ears (his favourite).
SOCIAL LEARNING
Grooming: The IRR groomer spent several hours together with another groomer from Second Chance Pets Rescue to get him as gorgeous as he is.
Children: He would not be suitable for children as he no longer trusts them.
Dogs: He is great with other dogs.
Cats: Unknown with cats
PELE’S DREAM HOME
Pele’s dream home would be with an active person or persons probably with another dog or dogs. They would need to be committed to continue with his training and in return, he will make a wonderful pet for them. It goes without saying, he needs to live somewhere surrounded by kindness and understanding with no chance of him ever being tormented again.
Pele is now in Somerset.
BLOG ON PELE FROM JASMINE
Hi, I’m Jasmine, foster sister to Pele and this is my blog:-
March 26th to 30th
Well, my new “bro” is turning into a bit of a fitness freak. By the time it got to Thursday last week, he was going as far as I do twice a day, same Friday, Saturday and Sunday (well – also today and he’s not struggling with any of it). He’s managed to get over a massive stone stile twice, the rest of us dogs go through a gap in the hedge, then so did Pele but when Mum went the next few feet to the stile proper he went back for her. What can I say…………….these young un’s……………..
He loves being brushed – Dad got the brush out the other day and showed it to me (I love being brushed too), I went skipping out into the garden and I had my brush, Benny stood second in line. Pele started tearing around the garden and did some figures of 8 round the conifers, trying to jump on dad’s back, then he zipped into the house scattering the dog beds everywhere. When his turn came he could hardly contain himself, bouncing round and tail thrashing.
Mum said to tell you that he does NOT like her hairdryer. When that comes out he legs it ….. he’s not frightened particularly, just doesn’t like it. Actually, he’s slightly wary of things moving towards him, so Mum has shown him the inside of every cupboard and she only got the hoover out when he was out walking with me and dad.
He’s a little clingy but, given all the changes in his life in a short space of time, we’re allowing that and over the past 2 days he has started to come away from Mum and has started to sleep with me (separate beds I hasten to add). When he’s not out walking with us, he’s recovering and can be found catching up on his sleep.
He is still diving into his dish but the feeding is definitely better. When Benny went back home on Saturday, Mum started feeding him from the dish she uses for Ben. It’s a bit heavier than those pretty ones we were given last year. He’s definitely not chasing it round the floor quite as much and, now, we finish at the same time so he’s being no more of a pig than me and I’m a lady.
Mum’s been promising him lots of lovely sunny walks on Cornish beaches with his new family very soon but then she had to check on the map where Redruth was just in case she was telling him lies.
Anyway, I have been saving the best bit until last – Mum didn’t like this at all but I was well impressed with my boy.
You see, he picks things up and doesn’t want to let go sooooo there he was walking down the road with a thermal coke cup over his nose … Snozzle Durante ring any bells?
Tissues, leaves, you name it but, yesterday, in that awful weather, he really surpassed himself ……… he only went and caught a rabbit, it didn’t half squeal! Well, when I say caught – it wasn’t running – he just looked to his right and it was there sitting under the hedge so he just grabbed it. Anyhow, Mum was yelling “drop it” and he did so it hopped away. I was going to chase it but Mum said “leave it” so I thought I’d better do as she said. I have to admit, we both looked to see if it was still there this morning but it had gone:((((
Anyhow must go. Things to do. Speak again soon love Jasmine xx
Previously …
March 24th 2015. After Aunty Pauline brought him to us, I more or less stayed out of his way, the whole of the rest of the day and the evening too.
Mum discovered he likes to chase bees and later moths. The bee was a surprise – bit early in the year we thought.
Mum said he was playing but I thought he was trying to push and shove me about. He tried it with Benny and Benny told him off. That was a surprise to all of us – including I suspect, Benny himself!
He likes picking up slippers.
He keeps grabbing at the slip lead so Mum had to wait and issue “good” when he stopped. He must be a bit smart cos he got the hang of that quite quickly.
He was very hungry, nearly grabbed the dish out of Mum’s hand before she got near the floor. Me and Benny and Kimba used to just wait until our names were called so that
took my Mum by surprise.
No problems overnight
March 25th. I’m still keeping out of his way.
He’s being very respectful of Benny since yesterday.
He is very observant of traffic on the “new” A303, wasn’t frightened, just pointed out it was there.
We saw two deer this morning – that WAS interesting. There was a man in a van trying to video the deer, wasn’t too sure of that because the lane is very narrow so Mum brought him back.
He did the lead thing again – not for long though – its obviously something that’s been trained into him. He may have been taught to carry it.
He is absolutely fascinated with the toilet, tries to chase the water when you flush, needless to say the lid stays down!!!
He’s much more settled today. He’s been helping make up the puppy packs for the new course starting tonight.
Mum has gone onto the laptop and he keeps trying to nudge her arm out of the way. It’s quite funny really but I refuse to laugh and I am determined to still keep out of his way.
No doubt, I will eventually give in and we’ll soon be good friends.
