OUR LOVELY SPECIAL FRIEND HAS GONE (11.12.2014)

A totally distraught Denise and Gerry broke the very sad news to us and we are all devastated for them too. They did all they could for him but, in the end, there was only one huge act of love left for them to undertake.

In Denise’s words “I had to have my beautiful Sammy put down today. He was a really poorly boy and the vet who x-rayed him found lots of tumours in his lungs.

He was a really special boy who had a not so good life in the past, but I console myself that he had three wonderful years on the moors being loved and spoiled. We miss him so much.

SAMSON’S RECENT HISTORY

SUDDENLY THINGS CHANGED

Sadly, Samson’s fortunes were destined to change again when the family’s circumstances altered dramatically meaning Samson had to be rehomed again. He was fostered as an emergency but that turned out to be a wonderful move for him as his fosterers fell totally in love with him and “failed” spectacularly. So, Samson is now in a wonderful new forever home near Exmoor in Somerset where he has settled in very well.

UPDATE LATER IN DEC 2011

His new owner says:
“Samson seems very happy. It took a little time for my other guys (Nono the IRR resident dog, Molly the old lady, Mouse the cat and 16-hands Hufflepuff the horse) to realise his little grunts are growls of joy and greeting, not an act of aggression. The cat told him that he did not want to play or be chased and Samson said “OK” and now gently goes up and sniffs. Slight shock when we go out over the moor each day – Sammy said “You want me to walk how far!” but got on with it and enjoys every minute. Nono is trying to encourage him into the water, but so far we have only got our paws wet. He loves being brushed and has now got a lovely shiny black nose. He is not very obedient at the moment and has selective hearing (typical man!) We’re all looking forward to Christmas with Samson and they are all looking forward to their Christmas treats, which are sitting wrapped under the tree.”

UPDATE 5 JAN 2012

Just an update on Sammy (Samson) who is a big baby and adorable. However we have had a few hiccups, very greedy with food, so had to learn to share and eat only dog food and NO tidbits – he hears the bread bin from 100 yards. Sammy is a nightmare out on the moor and fields. He is the only Retriever I know that gets on a rabbit scent and then loses his hearing completely!! He has lost a little weight and now actually runs along with Nono. He loves his ‘Santa Paws’ blanket that was his present when he arrived, sleeps with it and walks around with it, also puts holes in it!! But it is his. Nono thinks he is crazy, but says he fits in with a mad household and he is teaching Sammy how to swim, well paddle at least. At the moment we are working on “You don’t retrieve ducks when they are still alive!!!”

SAMSON’S ORIGINAL HISTORY

SAMSON is a beautiful 3.5 yrs old Golden Retriever. He is vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He has always been very well loved by his family who are totally distraught at being forced to give him up. He was reared with young children from a tiny puppy and is normally extremely gentle and tolerant. His owner looked after children during the day and, 3 weeks before having to give him up for adoption, he was the centre of attention at a birthday party with 18 children. Sadly, an 11 year old boy, who wanted his ball tried to choke him with both hands, physically shaking his head. Having dropped the ball, the choking continued and Samson naturally retaliated and nipped the child and, as a result, his distraught owners were forced into immediately taking him to a rescue centre who then passed him on to us to give him the best chance.

According to his owners, he loves his toys, is a very laid back, wonderful dog and even lived happily with 4 cats. He has mostly lived outside on an acre of land so isn’t really housetrained or socialised with other dogs.

Samson spent some time at Sandie’s, when he was neutered, and appeared to be very depressed without his family. He showed no particular interest in her dogs and they pretty much ignored him too.

He spent a couple of days with Jan after his arrival in England and then moved to Pauline in Somerset as his prospective new home was in that area. Pauline said “He walks reasonably well on the lead, despite not ever having been taken for walks before, and was fine with my other dogs, even in the really close proximity of my van, although, again, he was not particularly interested in them. It was upsetting to see how sad he was in comparison to the happy pics his owners had provided for us. He doesn’t seem to eat conventional dog food but absolutely loves anything in a sandwich. I guess that comes of living with, and no doubt cleaning up after, so many little children. He is incredibly gentle when taking food from your hand and absolutely loves having a brush. It will be great to see the smile return to his lovely face.”

Because of the blot on his copy book, we have been looking for a home for him without resident children, which was particularly sad for him as he was clearly missing the company of children.

THE SMILE IS RETURNING

The smile is now returning to Samson’s face. His narrowed eyes are now big and sparkling again and he is taking a lot more interest in anything and everything. He is learning to enjoy life again, without the family he adored, thanks to the love and devotion being shown to him by his forever mum and dad, Pauline and Chris in Frome. Archie, their rescue cat, still needs a little convincing that their new boy is a welcome addition but everybody else loves him to bits.

FEELING BETTER

Sam has been quite a poorly boy but he seems to have now turned a corner. His mum, Pauline, says “This is Sam this morning. A different dog than we have seen to date.”

“He is more interested in food now as well. He definitely likes tripe especially when it comes with shin beef, garlic and a few corn flakes. His swelling has improved even though its the size of a golf ball but it looks slightly more healthier than it did.”

“He’s very sociable with other dogs and people but his stamina needs some time to improve.”

BEST FRIENDS NOW

It’s taken quite a while but Samson now has a new best friend. As you can see they are very settled and happy together.
