Sandy was very happy to be a Sponsor Dog to help other dogs who find themselves homeless through no fault of their own.
EARLY HISTORY
A gorgeous, young female, Sandy was approximately 7 months old when she came into IRR care. She was too young to be spayed and really needed to have one season first.
She probably lived outside for the first few months of her young life. About a month ago, she was bought by a family through an Internet advert. The idea was for her to help an autistic child of 6 years old but, because she was a pup with no, or very little, human interaction, she demanded attention and was bouncing around the place making the autistic boy nervous of her. When the family couldn’t cope, they decided to try and get her rehomed. She is quite fat at the moment probably because she has never been walked on a lead.
Sandy was fostered in Northern Ireland before coming to the UK.
ASSESSMENT
She seems to be quite an independent Retriever as she has never really had any proper interaction with humans but we are sure that will change now she has been given the chance to live with her fosterer’s kind and caring family. She hasn’t shown any anxiety or nervousness.
Social Learning
We have been told she isn’t housetrained as yet but, in the couple of days with her fosterer, she has kept her run mess free every night by using the garden just before bedtime.
Lead walking: Her fosterer has been walking her on a gentle leader and she is now getting on a lot better than she was. When she first put the gentle leader on to her she became a “bucking bronco and a roly poly”. Just two days in, this only happens for just a few minutes before going out of the house and then she walks perfectly.
Children: Sandy has showed no negativity to the fosterer’s boys who are 13 and 10 and they have been able to walk her under supervision. Small children would be best avoided as she is too bouncy.
Dogs: There is no aggression with the other dogs and she has become best buddies with Pepper so much so they even sleep together. Initially, she showed a little bit of food protection towards Ben and Pepper but that was sorted out very quickly.
Cats: She is untested with cats
SANDY’S DREAM HOME
Sandy just needs a nice normal but dog savy family where she will be given the chance to develop properly and she will be loved to bits. She will definitely need obedience training but we think she will soon settle down and make a super pet.
GOOD NEWS (January 2015)
Sandy has gone to her Forever Home
UPDATE FROM HER FOREVER HOME
Sandy had spent the first 6 months of her life tied up outside and was then was sold to a special needs family. When she proved too lively for them they asked IRR to rehome her. Despite having no socialisation, no house training and no introduction to the bigger outside world she has jumped into family life with all 4 feet!
She adores her family and being thoroughly spoilt by them, loves the resident cats and rabbits and is amazing with any foster dogs who come to stay for a while. She is mischievous, fun, cheeky and incredibly loving and sweet.
